Israel’s “Yellow Line” in Lebanon Sparks Accusations of De Facto Occupation

(MENAFN) Israel’s establishment of what it calls the “Yellow Line” in southern Lebanon is drawing criticism and raising concerns over what some describe as an evolving form of occupation under the guise of security arrangements.

According to reports, the Israeli military announced in April the creation of the “Yellow Line” south of the Litani River. The area between this line and the border is being treated as a designated “security buffer zone,” a concept officials say is intended to prevent armed activity and limit the return of displaced residents.

Israeli authorities reportedly classify the zone as an active combat area, outside the scope of ceasefire understandings. Observers argue that this framing could allow continued military operations while reshaping realities on the ground in a way that may become more permanent over time.

The development comes after recent conflict with Hezbollah, during which Israeli forces conducted ground operations extending several kilometers into Lebanese territory, reaching areas across a wide stretch of the south.

The implementation of the “Yellow Line” has been met with strong rejection from Lebanese officials and political figures. Critics argue that the measure affects dozens of towns in the south, contributing to large-scale displacement. Many residents have reportedly been forced to move further inland, including toward villages in the Arqoub region of the Nabatieh governorate.

Analysts cited in reports suggest that the situation reflects a shift toward a more prolonged and uncertain military posture, rather than a temporary wartime arrangement.

In response, Hezbollah representative Hussein Fadlallah rejected the legitimacy of the demarcation, stating that the “Yellow Line” and its consequences would not be accepted and signaling opposition to any attempt to normalize the new boundary arrangement.
